Gloria Eletu

Gloria Eletu is the executive director of Mompreneur Association Ltd.

Gloria Eletu began her first business in her S.6 vacation. She learned to bake cakes and made cakes for friends and family. At first it was in response to kind favour requests before she decided to commercialize her skill. She began making some bit of money and continued to improve her skills with the baking books her mother bought her. What began as just trying out became a lucrative business although being limited to occasions such as birthdays, graduations, christenings, and anniversaries.

After a few years, her love for jewellery and creativity saw her venture into beading which she taught herself. With time she was able to get beading tools, unique beads and magazines on beading. She made earrings, bracelets, necklaces and all the while through getting good money from her efforts, through the support of her relatives and friends who also gave referrals. She also made beaded jewellery for introduction functions and weddings. Of course all businesses have challenges and this was no different - staying up late or till morning - beading had a toll on her back and neck, coupled with the Chinese influx of cheap jewellery (less durable), people would tend to purchase Gloria's better jewellery.

Alongside beading, Gloria decided to do gift hampers for companies especially during the Christmas season.

"My first client was Fresh Handling in Entebbe, for whom I made hampers, for a period of four years. At the same time I was making hampers for individuals for different occasions as well. Not only did I enjoy the creativity that came with it but also knowing the joy it brings to the recipients of the hampers," says Gloria Eletu.
